RABAUTZ:
is an attractive Singspiel for children respectively a children's opera.

Libretto/Lyrics: Roswitha Egli /Paul Hertel
Music : Paul Hertel

„A form of children's opera with reminiscences of the musical and avant-garde techniques. Wonderfully catchy melodies and harsh, but also spectaculary sounds. Simplicity and complexity stand side by side to make the story progress.“

World first performance : 18.06.1988 Schwäbisch Hall (Germany)
Austrian premiere at 'Internationales Kinderklangfestival', Vienna: 24.06.1995
Premiere of the first version for workshop: 'Kinder spielen für Kinder' 11.02.2004 at 'kinder musik wochen' Vienna

CONTENT OF THE OPERA :

Rabautz wants to discover more about what he really wants to achieve in his life. Since this is not simple, he is constantly on the move. Driven by his restless artistic nature he dispatches himself with a big parcel. This time he was taken by the post-woman to the zoo gardener. After the old great circuswent bankrupt, in this zoo now are living: The elephant, the choir of the monkeys, the lion, the old flea, last surviving member of the flea circus, and also the mole from the campsite. The world-famous clown Zampano here is now the zoo gardener. With his uproarious energy and his wild emotional musical talent this place is the right choice for Rabautz. As we will see, for the other individuals living here, it will take some time to understand that matter of fact. So Rabautz has to travel again, but that's not that bad. He meets in the 'other-world' the vain Dino and later on the wise Colombine...

Who is that mysterious Colombine and how does she teach Rabautz that free and easy playing an instrument? How is it possible for the flea still jumping that far? Why do Dino and Rabautz run in circles? All of this and lots more you just have to have seen. Of course the great circus-show is the highlight at the end. And everybody is welcome to join in the fun.

PRESS REVIEWS:

At the premiere the audience reacted with great applause.
The audience sung with the actors already at the first repetition the catchy melody of the final song and then expressed its gratitude with an outburst of applause.

The Antidote to Deadly Earnest.
The Singspiel ‚Rabautz’ was premiered at the 'Festspiele in Schwäbisch Hall'. It's sure to be anything but boring. With its fantasy stimulating game of the actors and actresses with their magnificent costumes the performance was a feast for the eyes and ears.

Rabautz does not practice scales.
The trigger for this colourful play was a young music pupil of piano teacher Roswitha Egli.It is said, that he was a real 'Rabauke'... At the end touching applause and ovations from the young audience!

RABAUTZ - WORKSHOP:

for about 20-30 children, suitable for the 6-12 age group with one or more subsequent performances.

Rabautz was originally written at the request of a professional German ensemble. Mainly due to the populitarity of the plot and the music was in collaboration with music teachers a version created, in which children play for children.(Kids 4 Kids) It was successfully tested for the first time in 2003 at 'Wiener Kindermusiktage' and then was played by a group of 8-10 aged children for more than 20 times. After that, the 'Workshop-version' of Rabautz as a work in progress was refined and checked during music lessons for this now available result. Based on high acceptance by the young actors, the teachers and the parents of music-learning children.

The CONCEPT :

Young Music Theatre as music courses or performance series.

Young music students (children) are treated comprehensively over a number of weekends by several educational specialists to prepare a perfomance of the Singspiel RABAUTZ. Everybody of the course can participate in a small or large stage role, or maybe in one of the first stage roles of the play. In the choir, or as an instrumentalist - playing one of the various possible instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxyophone, bassoon, trombone, violin 1, violin 2, alto, cello double bass, piano, percussions. All these instruments and even more can be selected. The music scores are designed in a way that it is possible to combine all of the instruments or only one or two of them with the obligatory piano. For instance a duo, a piano trio, a piano quartet and so on. The full range of this workshop has to be seen as a modular system. Maybe the young artists are at the end of the day together with their teachers on stage, or if there are enough participants they act and sing and play right just like the professionals 'alone' on the stage..

**************************************************************************

The following list gives the main categories of combinations that can be done:

Example A: In this workshop are children that love to sing and play a role on stage, but there is no one that plays a musical instrument. This children have some experience and do well on stage. Solution: the children sing and play and an additional pianist will play the music on a pinao or keyboard. A more difficult variation would be to do so with the available tape as backing track.

Example B: In this workshop are children that love to sing and play a role on stage, but they have no experience and feel insecure on stage. There is no one that plays a musical instrument. Solution: the children sing and play only the songs. During the performance a teacher has a role as a narrator and provides so a structure to the play. He or she can also take part as the gardener or Colombine. An additional pianist will play the music on a pinao or keyboard. A more difficult variation would be to do so with the available tape as backing track.

Example C: In this workshop are children that love to sing and play a role on stage and there are some that play a musical instrument. This children have some experience and do well on stage and in the small orchestra. Solution: the children sing and play also the instruments in different combinations.

Example D: In this workshop are children that love to sing and play a role on stage and there are a lot that play a musical instrument quite well. This children have good experience and do well on stage and in the orchestra. Here the 'profi-score' /maybe in combination with the version for music education ("RABAUTZ for pupil-orchestra") is performed. Solution: the children sing and play also the instruments in different combinations. If there are not enough instrumentalists an additional pianist will play the missing lines on a piano or keyboard.

In the music education area, the participants are trained by experienced teachers. There should also be a dramaturgical supervision. As additional workshop there can be one to design costumes, one to produce requisites and one for the stage set.

If this project is done in collaboration with a music school, some of the instruments can be prepared and rehearsed with the available sheet music for the classroom. (See below)
